Located just below the equator and just above Australia, Papua New Guinea is a large island nation with over 600 smaller islands off shore. PNG occupies one half of the Island of New Guinea... the other half is occupied by what was formerly known as Irian Jaya, but has recently been renamed Papua. PNG is one of the most rugged and diverse places on earth. With nearly 850 distinct languages and people groups, it is by far one of the most fascinating and unknown places in the world.
